Great News! ALHI’s long awaited booklet on Indigenous labour is finally out and ready to be distributed across Alberta.
The printing of thousands of copies of Our Work, Our Indigenous Voices: First Nations and Metis Workers Talk About Their Work and Life in Alberta is one of the products made possible by a 3-year project in which ALHI members interviewed dozens of indigenous Alberta workers to get their first-hand account about the challenges and successes they have experienced at work and in their daily lives. Their stories are not only interesting in themselves; they serve to counter the unfortunate stereotype that these people are not productive members of society. In fact, the opposite is true, as from the beginning of the colonial project that deprived the original inhabitants of their land and traditional livelihoods, the work done by indigenous people has contributed to the development of Alberta and Canada. A bus driver, artist, welder and ironworkers and several others open our eyes to the work their descendants are doing today.
The 72-page booklet was written by Cheryl Croucher, former CBC and CKUA producer and commentator on indigenous topics, and designed by Irina Edwards. Download a PDF of the booklet here.
