Organized workers, primarily in trade unions and political parties sponsored by unions, have played the principal role in democracies of promoting social insurance programs and other legislation of benefit to workers. They have generally faced resistance from capitalist interests before prevailing. Such victories are rarely permanent, and unions constantly organize to defend and extend social programs. Our 2027 Calendar looks at campaigns by unions in Alberta and across Canada over the past century and more that have made a difference in promoting social legislation as well as their resistance to efforts to roll back those victories.
