Profile: Simon Hosein is a Caribbean-trained welder and mobile welding plant owner with a comprehensive knowledge of industry and safety operations. Hosein arrived in Canada from Trinidad and Tobago in 1975 and joined Syncrude’s bridge construction program for bitumen processing. The welder/pipefitter initially worked on Syncrude’s powerhouse that generated all of the electrical power for company-wide operations. A member of Local 488 of the United Association of Piping Trades, he commuted weekly to Fort McMurray while his family resided in Edmonton.
In 1980 Hosein started his own mobile welding plant/rig, servicing mostly rural or remote areas and working year-round across Alberta. Hosein has mentored many apprentices and describes his rig ownership as a growing trend. His comprehensive knowledge across crafts has allowed for “live” or “hot” work at the highest standards of safety, with health and safety playing a critical role in the industry’s operations. He advocates for comprehensive mentoring and training of apprentices for better industry-wide standards.
