Profile: Anna Sokolawski attended her first United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) annual general meeting as a new graduate nurse, with only 5 months of work experience. From this unique perspective, Sokolawski initially viewed the abundance of nursing job vacancies and overtime hours as exciting opportunities to gain education and experience. But she soon observed the negative consequences of nursing staff shortages for colleagues, and for their and her ability to provide all the care that patients required. She expressed concerns regarding her own safety and that of her patients.
